Developing Energy-Zero Sterilization Lighting Technology Based on Visible Light

NO. 2512E05] KINGSTAR LIGHTING CO., LTD., a leading eco-friendly LED lighting manufacturer founded in 2011, has developed visible light-based sterilization lighting technology EnergyZero® — applicable to a variety of indoor spaces, including schools, hospitals, public facilities, and industrial environments.
Developed through industry-academia collaboration with Korea University, this technology utilizes harmless 405nm wavelength visible light to inhibit and eliminate the growth of bacteria, viruses, and mold.
Combining LED technology with the inherent functionality of lighting, the lighting itself is designed to continuously maintain indoor hygiene without the need for additional equipment or consumables.

Adoption of Visible Light Sterilization Method for 24/7 Operation
The visible light sterilization method does not use UV rays, so it poses no risk to the skin or eyes and can be used continuously 24 hours per day, even in environments where people are present.
This technology works by activating porphyrins within bacteria on a wavelength of 405 nm, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS then destroy the bacterial cell membrane and structure, resulting in a sterilizing effect.
While the sterilization method has a slower sterilization rate than that of UV sterilization, its safety and the ability to continuously monitor the space make it highly applicable in densely populated spaces vulnerable to infection — such as educational institutions, medical facilities, public buildings, offices, and research institutes.

Formed to be Fully Compatible with Existing Lighting Specifications
KINGSTAR LIGHTING’s EnergyZero® product line is designed to be fully compatible with existing lighting specifications, including flat panel lighting, room lighting, and downlight lighting.
Rather than simply adding sterilization functionality, this product line is designed to meet indoor illuminance standards while maintaining the brightness, color temperature, and light distribution characteristics of the lighting, thereby ensuring ease of installation and expandability.
This product line is particularly recognized as reliable solutions for use in facilities that must meet both illumination and safety standards — such as hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.

As they are LED-based products, maintenance costs are low and there are no additional costs for consumables like lamp- or filter-replacement, unlike conventional sterilization equipment. Power consumption is also very low, compared to that of general LED lighting, so there is almost no additional energy burden — even though it provides both lighting and sterilization functions.
This technological advantage is particularly well-received in public institutions and local-government procurement projects, and they are thus being installed and operated in numerous institutions.
