Significant Increase in Korea’s September Exports

Increasing 12.7% year-on-year

Korea’s exports in September this year increased by over 12%, compared to the previous year. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), exports last month totaled US$65.95 billion (approximately KRW 93 trillion), a 12.7% increase year-on-year. Despite U.S. tariff pressure, exports continued to grow for four consecutive months from June to September this year.
Exports increased for 10 of the 15 major export items, including semiconductors and automobiles. Semiconductor exports, in particular, continued their record high in September, following August, driven by strong demand for high-value-added memory, particularly for artificial intelligence (AI) servers. However, exports of petrochemicals and steel decreased by 2.8% and 4.2%, respectively, compared to the previous year due to declining export prices.
Display exports, which had been sluggish, rose by 1.3% to $1.92 billion. This growth was driven by the expanded adoption of OLED panels in IT devices and a partial recovery in demand from downstream industries such as mobile phones and laptops.

Mobile phone component exports decreased by $1.07 billion, or 23.6%, due to intensifying competition among component manufacturers. However, finished-product exports increased by $420 million, or 55.8%, narrowing the decline.
Computer and peripheral device exports decreased by 10.1% to $1.47 billion.This was a base effect, reflecting the surge in exports of solid-state drives (SSDs) for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers last year. However, the decline was offset by a 69.2% surge in SSD exports to the Netherlands, a European data center hub. Regional export trends show that Taiwan, which saw a significant increase in semiconductor exports, recorded $4.29 billion, a 53.5% year-on-year increase.
Regionally, exports increased in eight of the nine major regions, excluding the United States, which imposed reciprocal and product tariffs. Exports to China, which had been negative for the past four months, increased by 0.5% last month to $11.68 billion. Exports to the USA decreased by 1.4% during the same period.
Last month, Korea’s total imports reached $56.4 billion, an 8.2% increase from the same period last year. This resulted in a positive trade balance of $9.6 billion, calculated by subtracting imports from exports.

K-Electric Power Equipment in Great Demand

Three Korean electric power equipment companies — Hyosung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Electric, and LS Electric — are actively targeting the North American and European ultra-high voltage circuit-breaker markets.
Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that it will invest a total of KRW 100 billion to build a new plant in Changwon, Gyeongnam, which is dedicated to producing ultra-high voltage circuit breakers for export.
The new plant, scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2026, will produce 420, 550, and 800kV ultra-high voltage circuit breakers exclusively for export. These products will be supplied to global markets including the USA, Europe and the Middle East. Upon completion, Hyosung Heavy Industries’ capacity to produce ultra-high voltage circuit breakers will increase by approximately 1.5 times compared to its previous capacity.
Hyosung Heavy Industries is also expanding its circuit breaker plant in Pune, India. As the world’s third-largest power producer, India’s power-grid is being modernized in full swing, and demand for ultra-high voltage circuit breakers is rapidly increasing.

Hyosung Heavy Industries is leading the market, becoming the first Korean company to surpass KRW 10 trillion in cumulative circuit-breaker production this year. In July, it secured KRW 264 million in orders, the highest ever, for ultra-high voltage circuit breakers from a major U.S. electric power company.
Circuit breakers are devices that protect equipment and human lives by breaking an electric current in the event of power-system failures or abnormal currents at power plants and substations. They also act as a ‘fuse room’ in people’s homes.

HD Hyundai Electric has also been expanding its circuit-breaker business recently. The company signed a contract earlier last month with a Finnish design, procurement and construction company to supply 14 units of 145kV ‘SF6-Free’ high-voltage circuit breakers. This marks the second order secured in Europe, following a contract with Sweden concluded in May.
HD Hyundai Electric previously supplied high-voltage circuit breakers for projects such as a new city project in NEOM City in Saudi Arabia and a new city development project in the Diriyah archaeological site. It also received a KRW 64.4 billion order of ultra-high voltage circuit breakers in Korea for Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant. Performance verification of the company’s 420kV eco-friendly high-voltage circuit breaker is currently underway, aiming to obtain a certification in the first half of 2026.

LS Electric is accelerating its efforts to target the eco-friendly gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) market. A GIS is a complex power system that integrates circuit breakers and disconnectors into a single unit, and can be considered a type of circuit breaker. An LS Electric official explained, “We are proactively targeting the eco-friendly, over 170kV large-capacity GIS market, which even major global companies such as Siemens have not yet marketed.”

New Green Korea has developed a highly efficient solar power generation system compared to fixed solar power generation systems – after continuous demonstration testing through the development and optimization of an intelligent power-generation system utilizing the tracking of solar modules.
This system, installed on the walls of existing buildings, allows for the introduction of new and renewable energy generation facilities without additional costs beyond the solar power system construction, thereby significantly reducing installation costs.
The system is designed as a compact, detachable module, allowing for the repair and replacement of defective solar power modules, thus ensuring ease of maintenance and cost savings.
It boasts higher power-generation efficiency than existing fixed solar power generation systems, offering greater usability considering its installation area and capacity.

Solar Streetlight
New Green Korea developed an LED module that utilizes a light-shielding object in lens technology to address the inconvenience of streetlights intruding into homes at night. This reduces the angle at which light diffuses into the home’s backlight, preventing it from entering.
The NGK-30ESG model, which includes a light source, lighting fixture, and accessories, is used for lighting roads, plazas, etc.

Hovering Holographic Solution

Wireless Monitoring Deep Body Clinical Thermometer

ChoisTechnology’s wireless monitoring deep body clinical thermometer, Thermosafer XST600, can continuously measure core temperature using ‘Heat Flux’ technology. A wearable core thermometer attached to the forehead allows measurement and continuous monitoring through a smart device. It is also possible to sound an alarm according to the set temperature range.
