Gimhae-national-museum_1Since opening in July 1998, Gimhae National Museum has been dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the cultural heritage of the Gaya Confedracy, a collection of ancient territories which existed in southern Korea from around 40 CE – 530 CE. Gimhae National Museum is located in Gujibong, the site where modern-day Gimhae was founded.

The museum specializes in collecting and displaying artifacts showcasing the history and culture of Gaya, but also displays cultural assets from Byeonhan, a prehistoric territory around Busan and Gyeongnam which was the foundation of Gaya.

Very few written records of Gaya have survived, so most of the displays consist of restored relics and remains from ancient Korean people, which have been recovered through archeological excavations. This focus on archaeology and artifacts makes Gimhae National Museum unique among the national museums of Korea.
