Dot Incorporation has developed the world’s fi rst Braille smartwatch. Eric Ju Yoon Kim, the founder and CEO of the company happened to notice a blind friend read a Braille version of the Bible that was much bigger than the average and made up his mind to develop a Braille smartwatch, while studying in the United States. Kim took a break from school and returned to Korea.
He began his fi rm to create the product with his father, who worked as a sound engineer and involved some of his veteran peers. They then established contact with about 1,000 visually challenged people, who off ered priceless feedback. Such eff orts were rewarded with a working smartwatch for the visually-impaired, which retails at US$ 290 and weighs mere 33g.
Technically, the Dot Smartwatch has four active dynamic Braille cells and is made of 6000 Series aluminum. The gadget is powered by lithium polymer 400mAh batt eries. After a full charge, the watch can last for up to fi ve days. It comes with an exquisite 22mm leather band. The state-of-the-art watch for visually-impaired features a wireless MCU platform, Bluetooth LE 4.2 for the iOS and Android systems, a gyroscope and a touch sensor for the watch face.
With the Dot Smart Watch, the impaired can tell the time (down to the seconds), use alarms and read various messages/notifi cations sent to their smartphones. The 24 dots on the watch’s surface move up and down to relay blind users of a myriad of diff erent texts in multiple, practical versions of Braille. The revolutionary Braille display technology promises a seamless, portable approach to the traditional Braille device market. Bluetooth technology connects the device with smartphones, seamlessly. The Dot Smartwatch is scheduled to hit shelves on December 25.
