Korean economy losing growth engine amid premature senility

Untitled-71.jpgThe Korean economy is losing its growth engine amid signs of “premature old age,” with its size remaining that of a middle power but its structure changed to that of an advanced country. “Over the past six years, the Korean economy has grown slower than the global average,” said a Hyundai Research Institute report recently. “The gap in growth tempo between Korean and the global economy is likely to widen further.” To rectify this trend, the nation should help its businesses strengthen competitiveness and create new industrial fronts with high added value, it said.
As the most noticeable sign of premature senility, the report cites the declining contribution of exports to economic growth and the rising contribution of domestic consumption. Large and open economies among advanced countries, such as the U.S. and the European Union, have economic structures bolstered by domestic consumption because they also have strong per capita purchasing power and huge domestic markets, the report said.
In Korea, exports have made an absolutely large contribution to economic growth in the past but domestic consumption is increasingly making up for the slump in shipments overseas. “This is an optical illusion of sorts, however, in which the prolonged sluggishness of exports makes domestic consumption appear to be relatively vigorous,” the report said. “It’s not that domestic demand really has grown enough to increase its contribution to economic growth.” Also problematic is the private sector’s low growth rate.
According to the report, Korea’s growth rate in the first half of this year was 2.8 percent, but the private sector’s growth rate was 1.8 percent. The gap indicates that the private sector’s growth rate has failed to keep up with that of the public sector, the report said.
Contributing further to the economic instability is the government’s policy of low interest rates and liquidity expansion, which have not led to technological investment or new employment by businesses but ended up swelling household debt, the report points out. “Although the global economy and overseas environment are not very good, the nation should continue its efforts to recover exports by creating industrial sectors with high added value and investing in research and development instead of relying on domestic consumption,” said Ju Won, chief of the institute’s economic research department.
The government should not try to take the initiative in reinvigorating the economy, but allow private businesses to play that role by offering sufficient incentives for investment, he said.

Insadong Street

untitled-7Located in the heart of Seoul, Insa-dong Street is one of the most memorable attractions in Seoul and represents the focal point of Korean traditional culture and crafts. Stores in Insa-dong specialize in a wide variety of goods that can only be purchased or appreciated in Korea: hanbok (traditional clothing), hanji (traditional paper), traditional teas, pottery, and folk crafts.
There is one main road in Insa-dong with alleys on each side. Within these alleys are galleries and traditional restaurants, teahouses, and cafes. The galleries are the heartbeat of Insa-dong. There are about 100 galleries in the area and you can see every example of traditional Korean fine art from paintings to sculptures. The most famous galleries are Hakgojae Gallery, which functions as the center of folk art, Gana Art Gallery, which promotes many promising artists, and Gana Art Center.
The teahouses and restaurants are the perfect complement to the galleries. At first they might be hard to find, but if you take the time to stroll around the twisting alleyways, the window shopping in itself can be very entertaining. The shops in Insa-dong are very popular among all age groups, because each one is unique.

The Deep Roots of Insa-dong Street

Insa-dong Street stretches over 700 meters between the Anguk-dong Rotary and Tapgol Park (Jongno 2-ga). During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the street was dominated by Dohwawon, a place of study for painters. The area is still a center for the arts, and painters, craftsmen, and art lovers continue to set up shop along the narrow alleys, making it a unique place full of folk crafts, pottery, and paintings. The street offers rich opportunities for visitors to experience Korean traditional culture and arts. Various art events and festivals are regularly held along the street.

From Expensive Ceramics to Daily Use Items

Approximately 40% of Korean crafts are exchanged in Insa-dong. Some products even trace back to the Three Kingdom Period (57 B.C.-668 A.D.) The most popular items are Korean ceramics ranging in price from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars.
Other items sold in Insa-dong include earthenware, calligraphy materials, antique furniture, hanji, hanbok, teas, souvenirs, and cute accessories. Nearby shops include cafés, restaurants, ateliers, and galleries specializing in a diversity of items.
Every Saturday from 14:00 to 22:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 22:00, the main street is blocked off from traffic and it becomes a cultural space. Insa-dong is especially popular among foreign tourists. This is where they can experience and see traditional Korean culture firsthand, and also purchase pieces of fine art. Insa-dong is also close to other tourist attractions such as Cheonggyecheon Stream and Gyeongbokgung (the royal palace during the Joseon Dynasty).

Korea’s trade deficit with Japan totals $516 billion

Untitled-72.jpgKorea gained political independence from Japanese rule exactly 71 years ago. As far as the economy is concerned, however, the former seems to be still dominated by the latter. Since the two nations signed a trade pact to resume cross-border transactions in 1965, Korea has never recorded a trade surplus with Japan and the deficit has totaled $516 billion over the past five decades.
The annual deficit peaked at $36.1 billion in 2010 and is still massive at $10.5 billion for the first six months of this year. “Korea is now one of the most profitable exporters across the world but that is not the case with Japan and some oil-producing countries such as Saudi
Arabia,” said a Seoul analyst. “We cannot dramatically reduce imports from Japan because many of them are crucial components for our exports. The thing is that Japan does not consume Korean products for some reason.”
Korean enterprises, even flagship ones, have struggled to find their feet in the world’s third-largest economy. Hyundai Motor, Korea’s No. 1 automaker and global contender, advanced to Japan in 2000 with a great fanfare; but only managed to sell around 15,000 vehicles in 10 years, which prompted it to leave.
After then, the Korean carmaker shifted its focus to the United States and China. This is comparable to Japanese vehicles’ popularity in Korea ― 41,518 cars were sold here last year alone, although they lag behind German rivals such as BMW or Mercedes Benz.
Amore Pacific, Korea’s top cosmetics producer, entered Japan in 2006 with its premium brand but failed to make its presence felt. It eventually packed up there in late 2014. Samsung Electronics, the world’s primary smartphone maker, accounts for just 6 percent of the market in Japan where Apple and Japanese brands take the lion’s share.
Against this backdrop, Samsung came up with an eccentric marketing strategy last year of taking out its company name from its Galaxy S6 smartphones only in Japan.
Japanese people also prefer homegrown TV brands to those of Samsung and LG, the world’s two leading TV manufacturers that are far more popular than Japanese players in the global market. From the perspective of Samsung, there is a silver lining amid dark clouds ― its newly-launched Galaxy 7S Edge smartphone sold well in Japan this year, generating fresh hope for the upcoming jumbo Galaxy Note 7.
Korean liquor companies once flourished in Japan but saw their fortunes fall ― Japan-bound shipments of the Korean alcoholic beverage soju almost halved from 4.65 million boxes in 2011 to 2.42 million boxes last year.
Exports of makgeolli, the country’s traditional rice wine, sold briskly in Japan in the late 2000s and early 2010s thanks to the Korean wave but substantially shrank after that.
An outstanding exception would be Naver, Korea’s foremost Web portal, which chalked up a huge success with its Japanese subsidiary called Line. Thanks to its popular Line messaging applications, the firm went through initial public offerings in New York and Tokyo simultaneously last month and was valued at around $10 billion. News outlets said that Line’s tailor-made services for Japanese consumers are attributable to its success. But more than that, they seemingly don’t know that Line is a firm with Korean roots, according to observers.
