Intelligent Power Quality Filter

Power Quality Filter - PQ TechPQ Tech Inc. is a power-quality specialization company founded in 2000 that supplies a wide range of technologies and control facilities in bulk for all industries that require power and energy solutions – including construction, iron and steel, broadcasting, IT, airports, hospitals, government offices, residential facilities, and others. PQ Tech’s key product is the intelligent power quality filter, or IPF.

With today’s power transformation technologies providing maximum power efficiency for all industries, most loads used by uninterruptible power supplies, elevators, lighting, home appliances, computers and other devices are non-linear. These non-linear loads prevent a stable supply of sine-wave voltage. Harmonic frequency current significantly cuts the lifespan of transformers, cables and other electric components, and is one of the main causes of energy loss and malfunctions.

To prevent these losses, IEEE standard 519 and IEC 61000 series have created standards for electric quality. PQ Tech’s IPF was developed to control harmonic currents within these standard parameters.

PQ Tech’s IPF uses a SVPWM control method with IGBT that provides optimal response characteristics for maintaining power quality. In addition, PQ Tech’s filter doesn’t exhibit the resonance characteristics that plague manual filters, cutting maintenance costs and ensuring a long, stable operational lifespan. Parallel connectivity allows easy retrofitting for large systems.

“We have succeeded in establishing a solid reputation in the electric quality market based upon over 25 years of accumulated excellent technology and know-how,” said the president Park Byung-ju, adding “Taking advantage of exceptional accuracy, reliability, convenience, our flagship intelligent power filters are maintaining their competitiveness in global markets.

The company is strongly considering raising the dominance level of those products in market worldwide by boosting its export markets. He stressed “We aim to increase the export ratio of our total sales from the current level by up to 30% while actively penetrating new and larger foreign markets, including China.

Q3 export sentiment hits record-low since Q1, 2009

Q3 export sentiment hits record-low since Q1
Business conditions for South Korea’s exports will continue to stagnate in the third quarter (Q3) of this year due to euro-zone financial problems and China’s economic slowdown, a poll recently showed.

The export business survey index(EBSI) came at 87.5 for the July- September period, the lowest level since it record 66.1 in Q2 of 2009, based upon a survey of 964 local companies by the Korea International Trade Association (KITA).

The latest number shows that the EBSI has fallen below the 100 mark for Q4 in a row, meaning that pessimists outnumber optimists. The survey also showed that shipbuilding and petrochemical exporters have the gloomiest outlooks for the quarter with their index numbers reaching 57.1 and 66.7, respectively.

Of the companies surveyed, 22.7 percent said decreasing demand in Europe and China would pose difficulties for them, while 19.6 percent said a rise in raw material prices will likely pose the biggest problem for them in the coming months.

Container cargo volume climbs 4.7 pct in June

Container CargoThe volume of container cargoes handled by South Korean seaports in June this year will rise 4.7 percent on-year to log 1.87 million TEU(twenty-foot equivalent unit), revealed the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs(MLTM) Import and export cargoes are estimated to climb 4.1 percent to reach 1.15 million TEU, while transshipment cargos will climb 7.2 percent to 0.69 million TEU.

Transshipment cargoes, which have been recording a double-digit growth for 14 straight months since February last year, are believed to slow to post a single-digit growth for the first time in 15 months this June. Europe’s debt crisis has caused China’s cargo volume to shrink drastically, the explanation goes.

Busan Port, the largest port in Korea, saw its container cargo volume rise 5.3 percent on-year to 1.43 million TEU, while transshipment cargo grew 7.0 percent to 0.66 million TEU. The fall in cargo volume at the northern Chinese seaports such as Tianjin and Dalian caused transshipment figures to dip, say experts.

Gwangyang Port posted a cargo volume of 172,000 TEU, up 8.8 percent, on increasing exports and imports to and from China, the U.S. and Russia. The cargo volume at Incheon Port declined 0.5 percent to 162,000 TEU, said the MLTM.

Slow recovery in shipbuilding, petrochemical and steelmaking

ShipbuildingSouth Korea’s shipbuilding, petrochemical and steel manufacturers will continue to suffer from slow recovery due to a global supply excess and low demand in the second half(H1) of this year, according to a report released by KDB.

The report stressed local shipbuilding and display industry will show a high growth figure due to the base effect, but actual recovery will be insignificant. Mobile phones will continue to be strong but relocation of production sites to overseas will contract domestic production and export. Meanwhile, automobile and semiconductor sectors will perform well in both shipments and exports.

SKT to launch world’s first VoLTE service by September this year

SKT to launch world's first VoLTE serviceSouth Korea’s leading mobile carrier SK Telecom (SKT) is set to launch the voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) service, which offers clearer voice quality, at the same rate as the service using the third-generation (3G) network.

The VoLTE service is a voice call service that utilizes fourth-generation(4G) LTE networks. LTE service subscribers have used mobile data services through the LTE network, but phone call services have been provided through 3G networks so far.

The VoLTE service boasts sound quality twice as clearer than the 3G services, and the service will deliver subscribers’ voices close to the original sound on the phones. SKT’s video phone calls will also offer superior definition, clearer by 12 times than those offered through 3G networks, and connection time for phone calls will be reduced by over 20 times (0.3 seconds minimum).

Charges for the HD Voice services are expected to be set at 1.8 won($0.0016) per second, which is the same rate as the charges applied to the 3G services.

“SKT plans to set charges for premium-class HD Voice services at the similar level to the current charges applied to the 3G services as an effort to introduce the services to more subscribers,” a high-ranking SKT official said.

The VoLTE service will be available with smartphones that have LTE functions. Samsung Electroncis’ Galaxy S3 LTE is compatible with the VoLTE service, and LG Electronics and Pantec will also launch VoLTE smartphones.

All three S. Korean mobile carriers will be offering VoLTE services to subscribers by the fourth quarter (Q4) this year. LG Uplus and KT will launch VoLTE services at the end of September and October, respectively.
