Korean ICT companies reap unprecedented success at CeBIT2015

With 3,400 participating companies from 70 countries, the Hanover CeBIT 2015 provided opportunities for over 200,000 visitors to observe the status of information communications technologies from all over the world and to predict the future progress of these technologies. In addition to the 45 companies participating in the Korean section of the expo, 60 South Korean businesses displayed several interesting ideas and technologies, attracting keen attention from European buyers as well as buyers from all over the world.

CeBIT2015 Samsung Electronics introduced a total of 90 solutions, including solutions from their 50 affiliates, across six major B2B segments regarding distribution, education, medicine, logistics, hotels, and finance while also providing opportunities for visitors to experience the solutions applied to each segment. In addition to this, an IoT technology applied office environment and a distribution warehouse environment were set up to provide an outlook on future business environments. Samsung Electronics also introduced a number of mobile health solutions applied to smartphones and tablets.

A notable example included a ‘mobile exercise coaching solution for cardiovascular patients’ that has a remote health management function that sends the heart rates and blood pressures measured and analyzed by small sensors of exercising patients to appropriate medical personnel.

CeBIT2015_1 Samsung Electronics also demonstrated solutions for corporations such as ‘Samsung Pay’, a mobile payment system to be applied to the Galaxy s6,’ and the ‘Samsung Cloud Print,’ a solution that allows the printing of documents from any place and any time using smart devices.

Security firm Intercoax introduced a product that makes it possible to send electricity and data over remote distance using existing coaxial cables requiring no additional expenses. The product can be allied in B2C products such as CCTVs and also along industrial services such as industrial IPTV. Elvision Technologies introduced a pair of smart 3D glasses and a micro display optical module. The company differentiated itself through the use of an OLED display and is expected to introduce a complete product by the end of the year.

Startups focused on DB management also gained much attention. A nine-month-old startup called Rafa LCI applied mathematical analysis methods and deep learning technologies to an existing price trend compiling DB platform to introduce a ‘CLEBUS’ capable of predicting future commodity prices. The DB becomes more accurate with more data and more optimal coefficient configurations. Davolink introduced a ‘SmartAir’ solution capable of managing thousands of APs accessing a WiFi hub. The company became recognized as a success case having converted developed technologies into revenue in short periods of time. At CeBit, an Italian distributor assisted the company to expand its operations in the European market.

CeBIT2015_3 Digital acoustics firm Ganawavesys was another noteworthy company. While introducing Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 channel headsets, the company also introduced special cables used to connect acoustics devices that were developed based on self developed metal patterning technologies. Wireless car-pack and smart phone holder manufacturer Home&Co introduced a Bluetooth media controller called KEEPOP and pursued a marketing strategy focused on emphasizing its outdoor applications and small size. By doing so, the company managed to develop contractual leads with German, Italian, Dutch, and Polish buyers. The company expects over US$1 million worth of exports as they are also being asked to create customized products to fit the requirements of some of the buyers.

Multimedia electronic lectern manufacturer PK LNS participated in CeBIT for the third year and introduced a new solution based on a hardware and software merging e-learning system. The product was accepted as being customized, stable, and sustainable in the European market and resulted in over US$800,000 worth of contracts entered on site.

CeBIT2015_2 Mobile alcohol breathalyzer manufacturer DA Tech continued to maintain their recognition as providers of pin-point accurate breathalyzers and managed to develop US$1.94 million worth of contractual leads from existing European sales channels and new buyers.

Wonderlink, a business that provides tracing services for lost smartphones, entered CeBIT with a smartphone- loss-prevention device known as Q-Finder. The company managed to enter into three technical development agreements and nine highly possible export leads. Q-Finder uses a Bluetooth-based notification system that alerts users before smartphones are lost and also is fitted with a remote camera controlling technology. Dalseongtoseong earthen fortification

The Dalseongtoseong Earthen Fortification (Historic Site No. 62) is a defense facility from the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BCE – 668) built around low hills in the west of the middle reaches of Dalseocheon Stream. As suggested by the name Dalseong (“circular fortress”), the fortress has long had great significance in representing the area of today’s Daegu. The remaining traces of the earthen wall show that the fortification was 380 meters long east to west, 470 meters long north to south, and 1,300 meters long in its circumference. The wall is 20 meters wide at the base and 6 meters tall, and all together features a roughly five-sided circle.

Dalseongtoseong-earthen-fortification The fortress site contains many popular attractions including the Local Folk Museum, Gwanpungnu Gate, the statue of Choe Je-u who founded Donghak, or the Eastern Learning Movement, the monument of the widely admired patriotic poet Yi Sang-hwa, and the entrance gate to the site which is famous for the hanging plaque containing the inscription of its name, “Citizens’ Gate,” handwritten by the late former president Park Chung-hee. A spacious public lawn, age-old trees, relaxation facilities, and the significant historic background also make the site one of the most popular destinations among outside visitors as well as the citizens of Daegu.

Gyeongsang gamyeong and old alleys

It was in 1601, the 34th year of King Seonjo’s reign, that today’s Daegu was appointed as the seat of the provincial administrative office (Gamyeong) of Gyeongsang-do, laying the foundation for the development of the city for the future. Located in the city’s old downtown area, the historic administrative office site contains Seonhwadang (Tangible Cultural Heritage of Daegu No. 1) which was the governor’s office, and Jingcheonggak (Tangible Cultural Heritage of Daegu No. 2) which was his official residence. The site is enclosed by a complex network of old roads called Saseong-ro, now containing many tool shops and herbal shops whose history began in 1658 when the medicine market first opened.

Gyeongsang-gamyeong-and-old-alleys A recently developed tour program named Daegu Old Alley Tour now guides tourists through the old alleys of Jongno, Jin-golmok and Samirundong-gil. The area also contains many historic sites and buildings such as the missionary residences on Cheongna Hill, Gyesan Catholic Church, which is Daegu’s first Gothic building, the birthplace of Yi Sang-hwa who wrote many patriotic poems, the home of Go Sang-don who organized the historic National Debt Repayment Movement, Seongbak Alley, Jeil Church and Yeommae Market. Seoul Forest

Seoul Forest is the metropolitan government’s answer to Central Park in New York City. Based on its plan to create a forest in the Ttukseom area, the metropolitan government worked for one year to open the vast, artificially formed forest to the public in June 2005.

The forest covers some 1.15 million m2 of land, with a total of 420,000 trees of 104 different species were transplanted here to emphasize the ecofriendly image of the forest. The trees are about 20 meters tall and 30 to 40 centimeters in diameter. Oak, hornbeam and cherry trees are most common here, most of which are of Korean origin. The forest consists of five areas under different themes.

Seoul-Forest_1 The first themed land is called “TtukSeom Culture and Art Park,” which includes a plaza, outdoor stage, an artificial pond, an atelier and a gateball court. The second one is “TtukSeom Ecology Forest, a grand ecological forest which is home to such wild species as the Formosan deer, Chinese water deer, squirrels and fallow deer (they were released into the forest when it opened) (a guided tour is available).

Seoul-Forest The area is connected to Hangang Waterside Park via a 472-meter -long bridge. “Wetlands Ecological Field”, the third area, features a bird observatory, an eco-friendly playground and Jeongsu botanical garden. The fourth area, “Hands-on Nature Learning Center,” is a place where visitors can gain hands-on knowledge and see examples of various plants. This area also features Gallery Garden, a greenhouse and a flower garden made from the water purifying facilities which had long been used here. The fifth area is Hangang Waterside Park which includes a cycle trail and a boat terminal.

Gimhae national museum

Gimhae-national-museum There are a 8km walk, spacious green grass and lakes to give rest to tourists. Equipped with sport facilities as well as various exhibition halls of local plants, Gyeongnam Arboretom by has annual 400,000 visitors.

Located in Daecheon-ri, Ibanseong-myeon, Jinju-si, Gyeongnam Arboretom is a comprehensive study field of forest, animals and plants as well as citizen’s rest area. The arboretum is equipped with a display garden, a tropical plant garden, a green house of potted plants, a wild animal zoo, a water plant garden, Mugunghwa(rose of Sharon) garden, an academic research hall, sports facilities, ponds, an observatory. Besides mountain forest museum shows the history and distribution of the mountain forests in southern Korea. Videos are provided for better understanding. Some old trees attract tourists at the entrance; a 800-year old pine tree moved from Geochang Nature Resort Forest, a 500-year old hackberry tree, and a 80-year old acacia.

The display garden planted 6,700 trees of 15,000 species at 11 small gardens. In the big green house made of glass dome 200 species of rare plants grow such tropical, subtropical, temperate plants, oriental orchid, palm trees, papaya and so on. Various kinds of cactus and flowers in full blossoms produce an exotic landscape. About 200 animals of 21 different kind are playing in the zoo.

Gimhae-national-museum_1Since opening in July 1998, Gimhae National Museum has been dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the cultural heritage of the Gaya Confedracy, a collection of ancient territories which existed in southern Korea from around 40 CE – 530 CE. Gimhae National Museum is located in Gujibong, the site where modern-day Gimhae was founded.

The museum specializes in collecting and displaying artifacts showcasing the history and culture of Gaya, but also displays cultural assets from Byeonhan, a prehistoric territory around Busan and Gyeongnam which was the foundation of Gaya.

Very few written records of Gaya have survived, so most of the displays consist of restored relics and remains from ancient Korean people, which have been recovered through archeological excavations.
