Nano Lens[INQ. NO. 1812E01] A Nano-level lens technology has been developed for producing the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display that can reduce the power consumption while realizing high-definition video. Due to excellent light extraction and light absorption, this product is suitable for use in various optical industries, such as solar battery, photo detector, glass for automobiles, buildings, etc., in the future.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) recently announced that it had developed an organic Nano lens manufacturing technology that can manufacture low-power, high-contrast, high-quality OLED display using a vacuum coating process.
Nano lens is a curved body made of organic materials ranging in size from tens to hundreds of nanometers and is mainly used in display products. Recently, in the OLED display market, OLED pixel size has been gradually decreased to micrometer level in order to realize high resolution, but image-quality degradation occurs when a micro lens having a size similar to that of a pixel is applied.
Nano lens is more outstanding in image quality than a micrometer lens of relatively large size and can realize the color stably. ETRI’s research team developed a technology that allows the lens size to be freely adjusted from tens to hundreds of nanometers, manufacturing organic Nano lens that is much smaller than OLED pixel. The research team explained that this organic Nano lens has advantages of decreasing the image artifacts and reducing power consumption while lowering changes of the picture-quality depending on the viewing angle.
In addition, the Nano lens can be manufactured by a vacuum-coating process instead of a solution process. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the manufacturing costs by omitting additional processes such as mask, heat treatment, patterning, etc. As the Nano lens manufactured in this way is an amorphous material like glass and its surface tension is high, it is not coated evenly but rather made as a curved lens. As a result of performance test, it was found that the light- extraction efficiency was improved by 1.5 times without any deterioration in the picture quality, and the viewing angle was also improved.
The related technology has been transferred to Jusung Engineering, which is an enterprise specialized in semiconductors and display equipment and its commercialization is under way.
ETRI research project leader Yoo Byeong-gon remarked, “Recently in a situation that demand for high-performance display products has been increasing, I expect this technology to be used for developing the display that can realize high- quality images and reduce power consumption on the big screen.” | Blog Magazine of korean electronics, brands and Goods
