Korean electronic and IT makers’ battle

Korean electronic and IT makers’ battle for market leadership in China to be more strategic global players

The keen attention being shown toward China market among global IT makers is increasingly growing. Chinese consumers’ growing real purchasing power on IT goods is of a great factor behind this current situation.

Some major global corporates are seeking to seize hegemony in their specialized areas in the market while comparatively smaller companies are struggling to discover their niche markets in each of their specialized fields.

The forthcoming 11th Asia Electronics Exhibition in Shanghai (AEES2014) will be a great venue for those companies. Some numbers of market-leading and market dark horse Korean companies are also scheduled to proudly display their competitive solutions, expecting they can reap suitable responses among global potential buyers. Accordingly, they are working on follow-up measures to position themselves to be more market-oriented.

Korean-electronic-and-IT-makers’-battle Korean companies are expected to experience severe mode hovering at the fair again following this year version of IFA while luckily drawing hot attention. The small and medium-sized Korean makers have prepared products that could help them find niche markets easier with various kinds of attractive solutions.

There are some small-sized but eye-catching Korean companies. Daesung Atron, as a specialty mixer maker, has completed preparations to receive its guests, with its greatly attractive mixer item (“blender”). A Busan-based IT venture company Eye Max prepared its ground-breaking solution the so-called brainwave measuring instruments. MIR Technology will compete over competitors with its mobile video recording device.

For Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, the mega show will be a fiercely competitive venue to reassert their leadership again before the closure of this year two of Korea’s major players recently saw that Chinese competitors were eagerly pursuing them at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) 2014 in September, in Germany, in the areas where they are keeping at least few years ahead with technological superiority over China’s chasers.

At IFA 2014, Chinese companies such as TCL and Haier showcased products that feature technological prowess such as curved UHD TVs or OLED TVs. They also made foray into the connectivity home market such as the smart consumer electronics, a segment previously pioneered by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. The voices from the fair’s participants “Chinese companies are rising more rapidly than expected” proved it.

Korean firms lead the steady development of the global LED lighting market

Korean firms lead the steady development of the global LED lighting market

Korean small- and medium-sized LED lighting makers are leading the rapid spread of advanced LED lighting solutions equipped with advanced semiconductor & IT-based technologies, and energy saving & eco-friendly features.

With lighting accounting for 19 percent of the world’s electricity consumption, the concern on the introduction of LED lighting products, which has advantages not only of energy-saving effects, but also for being eco-friendly, is increasingly growing in the global market.

The current steady growth of the lighting market is largely attributable to three causes-firstly, the decrease of manufacturing costs due to technology development and the price decrease of the part materials; secondly, each nation’s support in policy including the ban of using of incandescent light bulbs; and thirdly, standardization and the recovery of global economy.

Reflecting the two current global hot issues of energy efficiency and eco-friendly, LED lighting products are now rapidly replacing the existing inefficient lightings ones in the global market, caused by the rapid price decrease of LED lighting products. As of now, the scale of the global LED lighting market is US$28.4 billion, which is expected to reach $42.4billion in 2016, and even then it is forecast to continue its high growth to 30% annually by 2017.

Thanks to the overall sales growth of LED lighting items, the operating rate of Korean major LED companies increases, so that their burden on the fixed costs decreases. Domestic companies have acquired overall competitiveness of their LED lighting products over those of the rival companies worldwide, with the help of cost-reduction by the supply expansion of LED lighting products, acquirement of technology competitiveness, and arrangement of export marketing strategy considering the characteristics of each market in the global market.

Korean makers are witnessing the steadily growing popularity arising from the global advanced market for their quality products. Such favorably growing responses are based on some noticeable differentiated advantages of the products they produce over foreign competitors’ items. The nation makers have succeeded in acquiring LED production capacity by utilizing semiconductor-based technology (the world’s No. 1 production capacity of LEDs).

Now they have sought to supply the specialized products satisfying the characteristics of each market in the global market, after finding some potential global niche markets. Korean makers are supplying items featuring cost- and technology-competitiveness to global customers.

Korean makers and their products are responding well to each nation’s basic policy of emphasizing eco-friendly and energy-saving products by supplying solutions on various fusion technologies based on IT technologies. Thus, Korean companies could obtain competitiveness in terms of quality and prices in Asian regions, even in advanced markets.

IFA 2014

S. Korean companies to seek this year’s second round of their ever massive promotion at IFA 2014 following at the CES 2014

ifa-2014 South Korea’s consumer electronics makers are massively seeking to promote the brand awareness of their products in the second half of the year again through participation in IFA 2014 to be held in Germany from September 5 to 10, following the similar level of the world’s largest exhibition of CES 2014 held early this year in the U.S.A.

Korean companies consider that exhibition as a best place through which they not only basically seek broader promotion, but also further proactively seize the latest trends of consumer electronics areas, in an attempt to seek aggressive response in boosting their presence in global markets. They are passionate in leading the global overall current trends of pursuing diversity, effectiveness, sustainability and, of course, elegant design and smart functionality.

Korean companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will confirm the competitiveness again of the solutions presented in previous versions of that fair in such specific areas of TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. commonly armed with strengthened smart functions, which enable convenient sharing of contents among various kinds of home appliances, and seek ideas from newer productive demands on the live site to be further armed with more innovative design and function and thereby contribute to the benefits of global consumers.

In particular, Samsung Electronics arranged ever-wider space for the fair, hinting that it strongly want to keep its larger share of leadership in global market than global some rivalry companies including LG Electronics. The global giant company will present a virtual reality headset “Gear VR”, along with Galaxy Note 4, which is expected to cause a big sensation among visitors loving to experience the virtual reality.

The concept employed for the product is the same as Google’s previously unveiled item of corrugated cardboard VR headset, but is a product that ensures easiness to wear as it uses elastic headbands and cushions at both ends of the device.

S. Korean Companies to Reaffirm Their Competitive-Edge Status at CommunicAsia 2014

S. Korean Companies to Reaffirm Their Competitive-Edge Status at CommunicAsia 2014

The upcoming CommunicAsia 2013, the largest-scale integrated ICT exhibition in the Southeast Asian region, will be a challenging venue, especially for South Korean companies.

The leadership of Korean ICT companies is growing in the global market, led by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, the nation’s premier ICT makers mainly focused on areas of communications, networking, information technology, digital media, mobile contents, etc. They are scheduled to display their flagship solutions, aiming to reaffirm their current status and competitive edge in the region.

coverstory

There will be significant business outcomes for Korean companies – regardless of their sizes. Korean ICT companies have sought to find new growth engines by applying their existing sectors of strengths. Small but high-tech companies are trying to maintain their competitiveness in the niche areas, overcoming challenges from their larger competitors overseas.

Among small-sized but highly anticipated Korean solution providers, Hankyung I-NET is expected to make inroads with its flagship item of smart cooling racks as an extremely competitive green IT solution again following its promotion last year. Dasan Networks has also arranged several highly noticeable FTTx solutions including mobile backhaul pre-service aggregation router.

Some medium-sized but global top-level ICT-related companies including Moneual are successfully presenting big performance in the global markets – with preemptive release of market-leading products and creative approach strategies for the global market. In fact, Moneual after a considerable time of unique approaches – including avoiding “red ocean” areas that global ICT giants already had in the grip of hegemony could emerge as one of the three largest ICT companies that represent the Korean market.

With the recent most notable news of ICT-related market gains, especially in the area of TVs, Korean makers’ global market share in terms of sales volume is approaching 50 percent. Especially for the areas of large-sized TVs and UHD TVs, the areas where Korean companies overwhelm competitors’ market share level.

U.S. market researcher DisplaySearch recently said in a report that excluding cathode-ray tubes, Samsung Electronics accounted for 29.6 percent of the global flat TV market in the first three months of the year, marking an alltime high for any quarter. The South Korean tech giant also retained its No. 1 place in the global TV market for 33 consecutive quarters since 2006. LG Electronics recorded a market share of 16.9 percent. The combined market share of the two companies was 46.5 percent, meaning that almost one of every two flat-screen TVs in the world is
manufactured by Samsung or LG.

SMBA’s Policy to Help Strengthen of S. Korean SMEs’ Export Capacity in Global Market Comes out with Specific Outcomes

Special Report
South Korea has succeeded in accomplishing US$1trillion in trade volume in 2013 for the third consecutive year while retaining the world’s eighthlargest trade giant status in the global market. There are a great number of South Korean enterprises behind such an amazing historical achievement.

Among numerous contributors, small- and mediumsized enterprises’- which have been played pivotal roles in the national economy accounting for 99.9% of all enterprises (3 million SMEs), 87.7% of all employees (10.8 million employees), and 47.6% of production – contributions for the outcome deserve to be especially esteemed in spite of their comparatively low ratio of entire performance compared to many conglomerates including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, etc.

With their independent consistent utmost efforts for expanding their presence in the global market and favorable export conditions mainly by FTAs made with South Korea, Korean SMEs witnessed slightly expanded volume of export to foreign markets amid global recession in consumption – especially in the area of automotive parts.

South Korean SMEs has played their important role for the performance through directly exporting their flagship export items to global market and helping export of the finished goods of the larger-sized Korean enterprises by supplying parts products to them.

There was remarkable government-level policy behind SMEs’apparent contribution to the nation’s such stride. The Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA) executed a policy that is designed with an aim to help strengthen the export capacity of South Korean SMEs.

This policy is focused on boosting the gradual increase of SMBs’ export volume by supplying various kinds of specific services promoting exports of SMEs including education, design, global market information supply, marketing, market research, strategy consulting, global brand development, etc.

Under this support policy, last year, more than 1,600 Korean SMEs could enjoy direct and indirect effect in expanding their presence in global markets through being intensively, frequently, effectively, and strategically exposed to global business partners by supported exportboosting services.

For contributing to the further increase of the global presence of those selected items in 2014 again, Korea Buyers Guide covers 20 companies’products based upon their comparatively superior quality among more than 1,600 companies’ items.

IFSEC International 2014: Korean Companies to Unveil Their Globally Advanced Security Solutions

International 2014
Due to rising concerns over security and safety, the security market (including video surveillance and access control) has been experiencing significant growth in South Korea and other countries. The demand for technically advanced surveillance and access systems has increased, thereby, creating enormous opportunities for CCTV and access control manufacturers, operators, and distributors.

The fast-growing security market offers the security industry significant growth potential while also playing an important role as a test-bed for innovative security products. So, security players around the world, as partly proven through recently successfully closed SECON2014, the Korea’s largest and Asia’s leading exhibition and conference for the security industry, are showing keen interest in South Korea to follow the latest trends in security technology and gauge the market sentiment.

As one of the notable recent trends in Korea’s security market, the number of global security players and large South Korean security companies entering the IP camera market in South Korea has rapidly increased. Large local companies such as Dongbu CNI, LG N-SYS, Kolon BENIT and Hyosung Information Systems have launched their business for IP cameras. Also, Chinese companies such as Hikvision and Dahua have already been serving the South Korean market. These all may signal that South Korea is becoming one of the globally hottest venues for security industry and that the growth prospects for the country’s IP camera market are attractive.

As of now, most South Korean IP camera companies do not perceive the competition from abroad as well as domestically as a threat. However, they are concerned about the possibility of a market becoming overwhelmed by a price war where companies try to distinguish their products or services from competing products on the basis of lower prices.

Noticeable things in the first quarter of the Korean security market are that new versions are emerging of highly upgraded security solutions, including intelligent image surveillance systems, integrated entrance management solutions, integrated security systems, advanced detectors, medium- and large-sized building-customized integrate management solutions, real-time monitoring solutions using high-resolution image, network security management solutions, remotecontrol security solutions using smartphones and the Internet, etc. They are capturing keen attention among industrial circles, especially from local exhibition viewers.

Korean security companies are seeking new ways of steadily elevating their European presence including participating in such high-profile specialized events as the forthcoming IFSEC International. The fair will offer them an invaluable opportunity for Korean makers to significantly assess the exact degree of popularity of their various kinds of security solutions armed with advanced designs and technologies in the region for the upcoming year.

Any accumulated insights gained from the event will help Korean companies to create newer versions of upgraded items for the global security industry and customers.

Growing Export Trends of Korea’s IT Industry

Growing Export Trends
Korea’s IT industry, which suffered from sluggish growth after the global financial crisis, was analyzed to have been enjoying growing exports owing to increased exports of IT parts.

According to the data reported by KITA (Korea International Trade Association), this year, the nation’s increase rate in IT exports (9.6%) has been conspicuously going beyond the entire export increase rate (1.3%) and so it leads the nation’s total exports. And especially the increase rate in part exports appeared to have reached nearly double the increase in finished goods.

The export growth of IT parts was conspicuous. The share of parts in IT exports reached 83% during the period from January to August this year, from 66% in 2008. Also the share of IT parts in the entire IT trade surplus was analyzed to have been steadily growing up to 83% this year. By product, three leading areas of semiconductors, communications equipment, and printed circuit boards were analyzed to have been leading the entire IT export growth.

Comprising the largest proportion of the nation’s entire exports, semiconductors featured a sophisticated export structure by balancing the weight between memory and system and so it enjoyed trade surplus in all of such main areas of memory, system, and devices. Display, an item taking up the title of No. 1 trade surplus item, was analyzed to have declined in the exports thereof for TVs, monitors. But the export of displays for mobile phones, tablets was analyzed to have been growing.

For mobile phones, however, the parts export ratio (48.3%) is found to be nearly approaching the level of finished products exports (51.7%). Considering the fact that parts exports including semiconductor and crystal display for mobile is calculated as separate item, the substantial part export can be interpreted to have surpassed the export of finished goods.

Growing Export Trends2
Unlike the existing normal trend of rise in export amount and of downward trend in prices in the IT export, from May this year, total IT export prices are converted into a mode of ascendance critically coupled with the recovery in the semiconductor unit cost. And especially, the nation’s competitiveness in IT parts products was analyzed to have been climbing thanks to the upward movement of localization rate in all parts products. By country, the dependency share of the IT products exports on three major trade partners of China, Hong Kong, and the U.S. was analyzed as 62%. China became the largest nation taking the surplus from Korea. And the trade deficit with Japan and Taiwan was also analyzed to have been expanded.

IIT (Institute for International Trade) released its official forecast that the robust exports by the IT industry will last through the end of this year and next year, and especially the two flagship parts of semiconductors and mobile phones will greatly contribute to the increase of total exports. It added, “But regrettably, as the trade deficit of parts of semiconductor, displays, and printed circuit boards with Japan, Taiwan increases, suitable measures for the matter should be devised and implemented.”

IIT’s president explained, “Amidst Korean companies’ fierce global competition in the IT parts areas it increasingly expanded into the Chinese market, along with the existing two rival markets of Japan, and Taiwan, nurturing of IT parts-specialized small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs), expansion of investment in R&D, and training of professionals should be carried out with the help of governmental-level official support – in order for Korean companies to secure consistent competitive edge and core original technology.”

Korean Consumer Electronics Makers to Seek Ever Bigger Business Opportunities at CES2014

cover2

Riding the wave of their Remarkable 2013 Performance

Korea’s exports have exceeded $500 billion, recording the largest-ever volume in its history in October. The previous largest export was $489.5billion in July 2011. According to export-import trends data collected by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), the nation’s exports and imports in October were $505.1 billion and $456.1 billion, up 7.3% and 5.1% respectively, compared to the same period of last year.

Some factors lay behind such remarkable accomplishments. The recent modest economic recovery in the advanced nations including the United States and the EU helped the nation achieve such outcomes. The economic growth rate of the United States recorded 1.1% in the first quarter and 2.5% in the second quarter following 0.1% in the fourth quarter of last year. EU also registered a positive growth rate of 0.3% in the second quarter this year after witnessing two consecutive quarters of negative growth rate – – 0.2% in the first quarter this year after – 0.5% in the fourth quarter of last year.

The export surge in the IT products and automotives contributed to such performance. The growth rate of exports, by product, is as follows: wireless communication gadgets (33.1%), automotives (21.2%), and semiconductors (15.2%). The diversification of export items and the export increase in the non-main export items can help explain such impressive results. The 5.8% of export growth rate of the non-main export items surpassed the main export items’ growth rate of 0.2%. The export ratio of these non-main export items steadily climbed higdher, ended up recording 21.2% in October this year. In particular, electric and electronic, cosmetics, and plastic products are doing great.

The growing exports to newly emerging nations also occupied the important position in accomplishing of the nation’s such performance. The export to the emerging
nations, all of which suffered from economic woes owing to concern by America’s reduction of quantitative easing, started to increase in October this year. MOTIE expects the export growth of majority of Korean-made products including IT products, automobiles will continue only of the economic recovery trends of advanced countries last for a considerable time.

Korea’s consumer electronics makers are planning promotions of their global-leading consumer electronics solutions with an ever massive-scale for the New Year at the upcoming CES2014, one of the world’s three largest internationally renowned electronics and technology trade shows, riding their notable contributions to the nation’s export growth in this year. Korean IT companies armed with various categories of their global market-leading technologies are considering the event an extremely suitable high-profile venue in preemptively seizing new and unique changes facing the industry, in order to come up with active countermeasures to raise their global market presence even higher.

The nation’s small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)’eagerness for the forthcoming highly anticipated exhibition appears to have not been behind that of conglomerates headquartered in South Korea including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics.

SMEs’ efforts in this direction relied on their strong technological competitiveness in each of their specific niche areas that have potentiality to help Korean SMEs to beef up their presence in the extremely competitive global markets. Most of those companies are commonly organized and sponsored by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Corporation (KOTRA), as well as some dynamic provincial governments and agencies as part of the nation’s toppriority policies to support those sized companies’ trade capability elevation to contribute to the growth of the national economy.

As most of global industrial experts expect, this show will likely become an optimized venue for South Korea’s two global IT behemoths of Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics to add to their cumulatively overwhelming global market dominance, the same patterns the two IT giants have been enjoyed for at least few years.

Already, the former has recently confirmed that its 24 items will receive CES innovative awards at the upcoming CES 2014 fair for their each of globally leading innovative features. The included heroes of the maker are: TVs (eight), home theaters (two), monitors (two), tablets (three), refrigerators (three), washing machines (two), etc.

Of note, the global conglomerates’ TVs are honorably scheduled to receive “Best of innovative award” following two years of its consecutive winning. Samsung Electronics’ smart TV ‘UN65H7100’ has a capacity that can speedily show 240images per second. And it boasts high operation speed thanks to equipped Quad-core CPU. The curved OLED TV and the UHD TV were included in the winning list for their contributions to one-grade elevation of the experience and image quality in the watching and to ensured performance of vivid picture quality through four-times higher resolution than general full HD ones, respectively. And Samsung Electronics’ one unit of TV and two units of washing machines have notably succeeded in acquiring a title of ‘Eco Design’ in their potential recognition of commitment to environment.

The latter has also made big strides with scheduled winning performances across its 15 items especially including 77-inch ultra-HD curved OLED TVs. For this OLED TV, such high advanced display technologies as OLED panel, epoch-making curved design, ultra-high resolution, and ultra-HD are emphasized in its design. And this TV minimized screen distortion while maximizing screen immersion.

The nation’s second-largest and globally top-ranked company, this IT giant’s strategic smartphone called LG G2 was also proudly included in the room of winners of innovative awards. This smartphone has applied a rear key so that users can control power and volume with only their finger without having to find a button with using their eyes.

And high-capacity, high-efficiency of the so-called drum washing machine equipped with innovative functions including a technology of turbo shot elevating the
washing capacity, a technology of smart diagnosis, oven applied with water washable surface material of ACE (Aqua Clean Enamel), etc. are expected to shine on the forthcoming awards ceremony stage.
